How to Get Rid of Poo from Baby Items

A poonami, poomageddon, poosplosion, a blowout… We all have so many names for the explosive poos that babies and younger toddlers treat us to occasionally.

Whatever you call it, when the inevitable happens you have to deal with it so that your baby’s clothes, reusable nappies and bedding aren’t ruined forever. Of course, making sure your baby’s items are clean and hygienic is the priority, but keeping clothes, nappies and bedding stain free is also important.

Stain-free clothes and nappies stick around for longer

Sparkly clean clothes, reusable nappies and bedding don’t just look better, you’re more likely to be able to pass them along to another child or family when you no longer need them. As a nation, we throw away around 11 million items of clothing(1) each week and almost all of them end up in landfill.

Keeping your baby’s nappy bundle clean and stain-free means they’re easier to use with a younger child or to donate them to another family, which keeps more fabric out of landfill.

How to remove poo stains from baby clothes and nappies

If your baby’s had a pooplosion and you’re facing a laundry basket full of difficult stains - or yellow stains if you’re still breastfeeding - then you might feel like you’ve got your work cut out. Thankfully, we have everything you need to restore your whites to white and your brights to bright

Our step-by-step guide to removing poo from your baby items

Although you’ll most often be cleaning baby poo from your stash or reusable nappies and liners, you’ll sometimes have to clean it from clothes, bedding and (we hate to say it) your own clothes. It’s a messy job, but poo is just part of parenting, so here’s how.

Remove as much solid (or liquid) poo as possible

If you’re using a Messless liner in your nappies then you can either dispose of it straight into the bin or scrape and shake as much as possible into the toilet bowl. If you’re using reusable liner or no liner at all, then tip the poo down the loo or even rinse it off under the toilet flush (remember to hold tight!).

Just a reminder – When it comes to cleaning your baby’s bottom, our double sided Reusable Wipes Everyday Pro offer a heavier yet soft texture that makes tackling even the stickiest poos far easier than using disposable wipes

We recommend nappy wet bags here at Bambino Mio because you can’t wash one or two nappies as soon as they’re soiled, but you don’t want to leave several in smelly water for a day or two. Storing soiled nappies and wipes in a wet bag - also known as dry pailing - helps to prevent the growth of bacteria as there’s not enough water for them to thrive. We’ve moved on from soaking nappies over night people – welcome to modern cloth nappying! (and thank you to innovative detergents and washing machines!)

With clothes or bedding, you might be able to add the item to an existing load that’s ready for the washing machine, so rinse off any remaining soiling and use our Bright & Mighty Laundry Sheets.

Check over the laundry load for remaining stains

It’s important to check the nappies or clothing for any lingering stains before it all dries, as this can make it harder to remove them. If you see any stubborn stains hanging around, our Bright & mighty Stain Bar has what you need to zap any nuisance mess. Simply dampen the stained area and rub the bar over it, before adding them to the machine wash.

Wash the pooey nappies or clothes in your washing machine.

Once you’ve removed as much poo as possible from your nappies or clothes, it’s time for machine. With our Laundry Sheets, you don’t need to use hot water - they’re effective from 20C, which saves money and energy.

It’s drying time!

When you’re happy with the whiteness and brightness, you can dry your washing. Direct sunshine is the best whitener there is as it’s 100% free and also doesn’t involve any harsh chemicals. If you don’t have a washing line or living through grey or wet winter months, a rack by a window will do just fine.

Bambino Mio’s top tips for dealing with pooey baby items.

Poo is notorious for staining, thanks in part to the pigment bilirubin (2), but you don’t have to live with this! If you’re having trouble with persistent stains, follow these tricks to feel whiter than white.

Don’t let stains set.

If there’s poo or brightly-coloured food on a special item of clothing, act as soon as you can so that you’ve got the best chance of eliminating it. An initial rinse and a rub with our Stain Bar will help.

Rinse through from the opposite side of the stain.

Rinsing from the opposite side of the stain prevents the matter - whether poo, food or mud - from travelling all the way through the fabric. Use cold water, ideally, as hot water can “set” the stain into the fabric.

Be gentle with the fabric

Our reusable nappies and wipes are tough and made to last, but scrubbing at the fabric with a brush may well shorten their lifespan. A simple rinse and rub with our Stain Bar is all you need.

Use the stain bar after you’ve rinsed.

Rinsing out as much of the stain as possible means less work for the detergents in the bar. It also gives it enough water to work effectively on the stain.

Be patient and let the bar do the lifting

It’s tempting to put a precious item, especially if it’s a special blanket or item of clothing, straight into the wash but you need to give the Stain Bar treatment time to do its thing. You can always rinse and repeat.

Be sure not to dry until the stain has gone

Heat, whether it’s from hot water, a radiator or from the direct sunlight, will set the stain and make it harder to get rid of, so only use warm water to rinse and a cool wash in the machine. Our Laundry Sheets are effective from 20C, so you don’t need to waste energy and money on a hot wash.
