What’s the difference between a progress chart and a reward chart?

What’s the difference between a progress chart and a reward chart?

Celebrate the little wins, not just the final result.

If you’ve started thinking about potty training, chances are you’ve come across the term reward chart. You might even have searched for potty training reward charts, potty training stickers or a sticker chart for potty training. They can all help make potty training feel a little more visual and encouraging for your toddler. But there’s a small (and important) difference between a traditional reward chart and what we call a Progress Chart.

Because potty training isn’t really about earning a sticker for getting everything right. It’s about helping your little one tune into their body, learn lots of new skills and become a little more confident and independent, one step at a time.

At Bambino Mio®, we chose the word progress on purpose.

A Progress Chart helps you and your little one see how far they’ve come, rather than focusing on getting it perfect every time.

So, what is a reward chart?

A potty training Progress Chart helps make the whole learning journey visible. Think about everything your toddler has to learn. First, they need to notice that feeling in their body. Then they need to tell you. Get to the potty. Pull down their pants. Sit. Try. Wipe. Get dressed again. Flush. Wash their hands...

That’s a lot for a little person.

So rather than only celebrating a successful wee or poo, a Progress Chart gives you the chance to notice all those steps along the way. And those steps won't always happen in a perfectly straight line. There’ll be days when everything clicks. There’ll be accidents. There’ll be forgotten steps. And there may well be days when your toddler decides that the potty is absolutely, definitely not happening. That’s all part of learning.

Helpful Tip

Potty training involves lots of little wins before you ever get to that point. And we think those deserve to be noticed too.

So what makes a Progress Chart different?

A reward chart is a visual way of encouraging a particular behaviour. Your child does something, earns a sticker or star and, sometimes, works towards a bigger reward. A potty training reward chart, for example, might give your little one a sticker every time they use the potty, stay dry or successfully do a wee or poo on the toilet.

For some children, that can be a fun and motivating form of encouragement. But traditional reward charts tend to focus on the end result: “I did it, so I get something.”

Why focus on progress instead of rewards?

Celebrating potty training wins is a good thing. Encouragement, reassurance and plenty of positivity can all help make potty training feel like a happy experience. The difference is in what you're celebrating. Rather than only saying, “You did a wee! Here’s your sticker”, you can help your child notice the skill they’re learning:

“You noticed you needed to go!”

“You remembered to tell me!”

“You pulled your pants down all by yourself!”

Those might seem like tiny moments to us. To a toddler learning a completely new skill, they’re big ones. Over time, noticing those moments can help your little one recognise their own progress:

“I did that.”

“I know what to do.”

“I’m learning.”

And that’s exactly what we want our Progress Chart to help make visible.

Can you use a Progress Chart as a potty training reward chart?

You can — especially if your little one loves stickers, stars or the satisfaction of ticking something off. But we'd encourage you to think a little differently about what you're rewarding. Instead of saving all the celebration for the final result — “I used the potty!” — notice the whole process.

  • Trying counts.
  • Remembering counts.
  • Asking counts.
  • Sitting on the potty counts, even if nothing happens.
  • Pulling pants up and down counts.
  • Remembering to wash hands counts.

They’re all signs that your child is learning.

So whether you arrived here looking for a potty training reward chart, a potty training sticker chart or something to help motivate your toddler, a Progress Chart can give you a way to celebrate all those little steps without making prizes the main event.

How to use a potty training Progress Chart

1

Put it somewhere visible

Keep your chart somewhere your toddler can easily see and reach it — perhaps on the fridge, bathroom door or wall.

2

Make it part of the routine

Talk about what your little one has learned and mark their progress together. Let them get involved too — after all, it’s their progress.

3

Keep it positive

Don't feel you need to turn every potty trip into a huge fanfare. Sometimes a smile, a high five and a few encouraging words are more than enough.

“Look how much you’ve learned!”

Our Bambino Mio® Progress Chart is laminated and comes with a dry-wipe marker, so you can mark those little wins, wipe it clean and keep using it throughout your potty training journey.

It puts the focus on noticing what your child is learning — from recognising the feeling that they need to go to managing their pants and washing their hands afterwards. Because potty training isn’t about getting everything right every time.

It’s about trying, learning, noticing and becoming a little more independent along the way.

And that’s progress worth celebrating.

Progress, not perfection

There’s no single perfect way to potty train. Every child learns differently and gets there in their own time.
