So, you’ve hit that stage where your little one is showing signs of being ready to ditch the nappies - exciting times, right? But let’s be real, the whole potty training journey can feel a bit overwhelming with all the different methods, tips, and tricks floating around out there. You've probably already been inundated with advice from friends and family about how they tackled it. But fear not, we're here to simplify things for you, so let’s dive in!

Potty training: The lowdown

Potty training can feel like a big deal, and that’s because it kind of is—it’s a major milestone! But guess what? There’s no one right way to do it. There are traditional approaches where you wait for your child to show readiness signs, usually between 18 months and 3 years old, and then there’s something called Elimination Communication (EC), which might sound a bit out there, but it’s all about understanding your baby’s cues from a really early age (we’re talking weeks old!) and responding to them.

EC is based on the idea that babies are in tune with their bodies from day one (more than we usually realise), and with a bit of practice, parents can learn to pick up on their signals and help them use the potty instead of a nappy. It’s definitely a more hands-on approach, but hey, if it works for you, go for it!

Why disposable nappies might be delaying potty training

We’ve all seen how the disposable nappy industry has evolved over the years, touting super-absorbent materials that keep your baby feeling dry for longer. Sounds great, right? But here’s the thing—when nappies are too effective at masking wetness, children miss out on those crucial early signals that help them connect the dots between feeling the urge to go and actually going.

We believe this is a significant reason why kids are potty training later today. If your little one can’t tell when they’ve wet their nappy, how can they start to recognise their own bodily functions? Disposable nappy manufacturers might not mind if your child stays in nappies longer—it’s more money in their pockets, after all. But at what cost?

Why reusable nappies make potty training easier

Here’s a little secret from us to you: reusable nappies like ours can actually help speed up potty training. How, you ask? Well, reusable nappies let your little one feel wetness faster than disposables do, which helps them connect the dots between that “I need to go” feeling and what happens next. It’s all about awareness, and the sooner they start recognising those sensations, the sooner they’ll get the hang of using the potty.

The reality: One in four kids start school without being toilet-trained

This might surprise you, but did you know that one in four kids in the UK start school without being fully toilet-trained? Yup, it’s true! According to a recent report by the early years charity Kindred (1), a lot of children are heading into reception still needing nappies, and that’s putting extra pressure on teachers who are spending around 2.5 hours each day helping with bathroom breaks.

This is why it’s so important to start thinking about potty training sooner rather than later, but remember—there’s no rush! Every child is different, and the key is finding a method that works for you and your family.

Keep it simple: What matters most

At the end of the day, the best potty training method is the one that works for your toddler and fits into your lifestyle. Whether you’re all about traditional potty training or interested in trying out EC, the most important thing is to tune into your child’s needs and go at a pace that feels right for both of you.

We’re all about making life easier, so here’s our advice: don’t stress the small stuff. Potty training is a journey, not a race. Celebrate the wins, be patient with the setbacks, and remember that every child gets there in their own time.
