A cake-based gender reveal party

Cake very rarely goes to waste so covering up a red, pink or blue cake with white icing and cutting into it in front of a baying crowd (well, a select group of loved ones, anyway…) never gets old. 

One of the great things about this fun gender reveal option is that you can be kept in the dark for as long as your guests! Just ask the sonographer to write down your baby’s sex on a piece of paper and seal it in an envelope, then hand the envelope to a local baker who will mix the dough with pink or blue food colouring.

If you’re expecting boy-girl twins, then you can add in a bit of extra suspense to this exciting time by asking for a purple cake, with the first guest to work out the twin gender puzzle getting the first slice.

Gender reveal bath bombs

This can be an intimate gender reveal for just one or two people, or you can send out fizzy bath treats to your entire family and friend group. They’ll start off white, or another neutral colour, and then gradually turn pink or blue.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to go down the pink for girls, blue for boys route, your bath bombs could contain a piece of paper at their centres with the vital info printed on them. Much cleaner than a smoke bomb or a bucket of blue paint!

A name reveal game

Staying with the non-pink-or-blue theme, another creative gender announcement idea is to reveal the name rather than the sex of the baby.

You could gather everyone around a chalkboard and play a hangman-style game to find out the name, or set some riddles to determine which historical figure or even fictional character your baby will share their name with. 

XX or XY?

Everyone loves a bit of science and so you could reveal the sex of your baby by getting right down to basics with a nerdy gender reveal. A chalkboard will come in handy here, too. Carefully choreograph a game of noughts and crosses before the reveal party, but add a twist. Instead of noughts and crosses, you’ll be using “XX” and “XY”, the human chromosomes which determine biological sex. The winning line is - you guessed it - the winning pair.

Quick tip - you should rehearse this game a few times before you perform it so you get it all right on the night (or afternoon).

The simplest of simple gender reveals

You could go totally retro and wait until the baby is born to find out the sex and then tell everyone else. It's hard to imagine waiting for nine months to discover whether you're having a baby girl or a baby boy, but it's what people used to do. 

Once you've had the baby, you can send out the animated video or even some old-fashioned cards with a gorgeous new family photo attached to share the good news.
